Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been remanded to judicial custody at the Birsa Munda Central Jail until February 22, following a court appearance after the conclusion of his remand period by the ED.
A civil court lawyer familiar with court’s development said “it was hardly a 20 minute formality when Soren was produced in the court by ED officials and the court forwarded him to judicial custody.”
Soren's legal counsel, Advocate General of Jharkhand Rajeev Ranjan, announced plans to apply for bail on behalf of Soren.
Earlier this month, Soren was taken into custody by the ED from Ranchi central jail for questioning, subsequently being housed at the ED zonal office. Despite pleas to shift him to the central jail during the night, the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court upheld his placement at the ED facility. The ED on January 31 arrested Soren.
